About Tomsk

Tomsk is a city in Western Siberia, the administrative center of Tomsk Oblast. It is situated on the right bank of the river Tom, 50 km away from its inflow into the river Ob.

Total area: 300 sq. km.

Population: around 560 thousand inhabitants.

Tomsk as an industrial center. Top branches: oil and gas complex, instrument engineering, power industry, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutics and food industry. Major enterprises: "Vostokgazprom", "Gazprom transgaz Tomsk", "Tomskneftekhim", research and production center "Polyus", "Sibelektromotor", Tomsk electromechanical plant, "EleSy", research and production company "Mikran", research and production association "Virion", "Tomskkhimfarm", OJSC "Tomskoye pivo" etc. There are also a confectionery factory, bread plants, and poultry plants functioning in Tomsk.

Tomsk as an educational, scientific and innovative center. There are in the city six state universities (TSU, TPU, SibSMU, TUSUR, TSUAB, TSPU), three non-state institutes, nine subsidiaries of nonresident universities and institutes, 11 research institutes of Siberian Divisions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Six business incubators, centers of commercialization and technology transfer as well as other elements of innovation infrastructure function in the city. In 2006, special technology development economic area "Tomsk" was created.

Tomsk as a cultural center. The city has a variety of museums: Museum of local history and Museum of arts, art galleries, exhibition halls, Tomsk museum of wooden architecture, Museum of history of Tomsk, memorial museum "NKVD house of detention", museums of universities, Botanical garden. The spectators are kindly welcome to visit regional Drama Theater, Theater for the young (TYUZ), "Skomorokh" puppet and actor theater, a chamber theater and "Versiya" theater, theater of living puppets "2 + Ku". The Philharmonia includes an Organ Hall, there are in the city several cinemas, a Palace of show and sports. Tomsk has active Orthodox cathedrals, mosques, a synagogue, a Catholic church and a Lutheran church. National and cultural autonomies as well as centers of national culture have been created: altogether around 25 unions.

For sports there is in Tomsk a modern indoor track "Garmoniya", an indoor ice court "Kristall", 17 stadiums, 22 swimming pools, 35 skiing bases, 2 rowing bases, a ski jump, 6 tennis courts, around 500 gyms. In the stadium "Trud" home matches of the football club "Tom", a club of Football national league, are conducted.

The most attractive sight of Tomsk is wooden architecture. In the city, unique blocks of wooden architecture of late 19th and early 20th century have been preserved, which turn the whole city districts into open-air museums. Remarkable stone buildings are Voskresenskaya church, main buildings of TSU and TPU, Scientific library of TSU, House of science, Stock building, House of officers, Mayor's office of Tomsk. Among the sights of Tomsk there are also University bosquet, a stone bridge over the river Ushaika, the White lake. There are several original monuments erected in Tomsk: A.P. Chekhov monument on the Tom quay, a monument of the students' patron Saint Tatiana, monuments of Happiness, of a Pregnant woman, of a Baby in the Cabbage, of a Wooden ruble, of House shoes.
